What did our ancestors eat?

One ancient culture originating from India used simple basic principles of daily living in the practice of Ayurveda. Ayurveda is an ancient Indian system of medicine, emphasizing the importance of diet and lifestyle for maintaining overall health and well-being.

This culture used food and specific spices as medicine based on your constitution. They pioneered in many surgical procedures which are used in Western medicine today. Ayurveda is not only medicine; it is a science of life which incorporates yoga, chanting, mantras, mudras, food, daily practices and brings in the science of astrology, astronomy and geology.

The Ayurvedic diet is based on the principle of eating whole, seasonal foods that are balanced in terms of their energetic qualities.

Here are some examples of healthy foods for daily living in Ayurveda:

  • Fruits and vegetables: Fresh fruits and vegetables are an essential part of the Ayurvedic diet. They are packed with nutrients and have a variety of health benefits, such as boosting the immune system, promoting digestion, and reducing inflammation.

  • Nuts and seeds: Nuts and seeds are a good source of protein, healthy fats, and fibre. They are also a good source of vitamin E, magnesium, and zinc. Some good choices include:

    • Sunflower seeds
    • Flaxseeds

  • Dairy: Dairy products are a good source of protein, calcium, and other essential nutrients. Some good choices include:

It is important to note that the Ayurvedic diet is individualized based on your unique dosha type. Vata (air and ether), pitta (fire and water), and kapha (earth and water) are the three doshas. Each dosha has its own unique characteristics and needs.

Tips for healthy eating in Ayurveda

  • Eat fresh, organic, seasonal foods that are locally grown whenever possible.
  • Avoid processed foods, sugary drinks, and excessive amounts of caffeine and alcohol.
  • Eat regular meals and snacks throughout the day to keep your blood sugar levels balanced, the main meal at lunch.
  • Drink plenty of warm water throughout the day.
  • Cook your food with love and intention.
