The Therapeutic Role of Amino Acids
Amino acids are fundamental to life.
They form the basis of our genome and provide fundamental information about nutrient adequacy, including the quality and quantity of dietary protein, digestive disorders, and vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
Amino acids (AA) were traditionally classified as nutritionally essential or nonessential for animals and humans based on nitrogen balance or growth. Amino acids are synthesized adequately in the body as substrates to meet the needs for protein synthesis. Unfortunately, the value of amino acids in integrative health has been underplayed.
Conceptual limitations have not been recognized adequately until recent findings have identified the essential need of Ornithine and Serine in insomnia, Glutamine in intestinal mucosal integrity or Arginine in neonatal growth and embryonic survival. Additionally, Glutamate, Glutamine, and Aspartate are major metabolic fuels for the small intestine and they, along with Glycine, regulate neurological function.
Analysis of amino acids provide important diagnostic information about hepatic and renal function, availability of precursors of neurotransmitters, detoxification capacity, mitochondrial ATP productions, and many inherent disorders in amino acid metabolism.
